A Far South Side man shot two people dead as three uniformed police officers stood just a block away, then opened fire on police during a chase in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood, prosecutors alleged Sunday.

David Russell, 22, of the 9500 block of South Calumet Avenue, faces two counts each of first-degree murder and attempted murder after 24-year-old Kenneth Taylor and Moneet Baker, 22, were shot and killed Saturday.

Prosecutors at a bond hearing Sunday said a police officer on patrol around 3:30 p.m. saw Russell shoot Taylor and Baker in the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.

As many as three officers were talking in front of a bank about a block away from the shooting as Russell opened fire, police said. When one of the officers shouted at Russell, he allegedly opened fire on police, then ran to a black SUV, prosecutors said. Russell kept shooting from the passenger seat at squad cars in pursuit, firing a total of 14 shots "until the gun jammed," Russell allegedly confessed to police.

Russell and the driver of the SUV crashed at 82nd Street and Drexel Avenue, then abandoned the vehicle in an alley, authorities said. Russell was found in a basement near 86th Street and Ingleside Avenue.

The driver remains at large, police said Sunday. Russell was ordered held without bond.

The Cook County medical examiner said Taylor died of multiple gunshot wounds and Baker of a single gunshot.

Judge Peggy Chiampas noted the "brazen" recklessness of the alleged conduct by the 22-year-old.

"Thankfully this was observed by a uniformed police officer... Thankfully the gun jammed. Thankfully the police officers were not struck and no innocent bystanders were struck," Chiampas told Russell. "All this at the very young age of 22 years old, and you're facing a potential life sentence."
